Why We Should Exist in Photos

Why We Should Exist in Photos

Recently I was reminded of just how valuable printed photos actually are.

It’s not that I don’t already know this…

Obviously, I’m a photographer and I value this art enough to make it my life’s work.

But even I, at times, need this reminder…

Unless you’ve visited the about page of my website, you probably don’t know that my dad was also a professional photographer for decades.

I learned the passion for this art from him.

He passed away over 20 years ago and now memories, a few items and printed photographs are all I have left of him.

His birthday was last month and in memory of him, I made a small altar with his photo, along with a crystal necklace he made for me when I was a kid.

I sat on my yoga mat with this altar- crying and meditating- remembering his beautiful spirit through this favorite photo.

It’s in these moments that I am so eternally grateful that my father valued photographs and that I have these prints of him that help me remain connected to him.

These photos are, without a doubt, my most prized possessions and always will be.

Existing in photos is something that many of us shy away from.

We tell ourselves, “Oh I’ll get in the next one” or “I don’t like how I look or feel today”…

Or, “I look so awkward in photos”….”I have no makeup on”…and the list goes on.

(btw, I’m guilty of this too)

And this is normal, but it’s also doing ourselves and the people we love a huge disservice.

To exist in actual printed photographs is not only one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves…

But it’s also one of the most valuable legacies we can leave our loved ones- our daughters, family and friends and the people who want to honor us.

While it takes just a few seconds to capture a photograph that we might have a natural inclination to avoid…

….that same photograph can help trigger a lifetime of wonderful memories and connection for the people who love us long after we’re gone.

Life is short and we just never know ❤️
